Taxonomy
Taxonomy is how organisms are classified. Organisms are classified in each of these categories: Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species. We will be learning about only 4 of these categories.
Let‘s learn what a Domain is. It is the 3 different major cell types. They are Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya. Bacteria and Archaea are prokaryotic organisms. Eukarya organisms are organisms with a eukaryotic cell. This is what Domain in Taxonomy is.
The 5 Kingdoms are Animalia(animals), Plantae(plants), Fungi(fungi), Protista, and Monera. Protists and organisms from the Monera Kingdom are usually microscopic. Kelp and seaweed are the only ones that aren’t. Animals are multicellular organisms that are sometimes microscopic. Plants and fungi are multicellular organisms that make their own food. These are the 5 Kingdoms.
Now, let’s talk about what a Genus is. It is a group of organisms that share a common ancestor. For example, since the tiger and lion both have a common ancestor, they both have the genus Panthera. It is the first part of the scientific name of the organism. This is what Genus is.
Now let’s learn about species. It is the second part of the organism’s scientific name. Organisms from the same species have similar characteristics. They also have similar genetics. This is a species.
Now you know some facts about Taxonomy. Don’t forget that Genus and Species are both included in an organism's scientific name.
